We get this question quite often. I guess it's time for a written answer.
We absolutely LOVE wood! And our beloved small pets love it too! There's nothing better than a wooden piece of furniture to make them feel comfy and safe! It's also worth mentioning that wooden items last really long, which is so great!
I'd love to share some tips on how to take care of untreated wooden items:
Floor makes a big difference!
It's really important to make sure your hay feeder, wooden castle, hideout or anything else made out of wood stays nice and dry! It's best to make sure it doesn't stand or be placed on a wet or damp surface. After all, we want to keep our little buddies safe and sound! 🙂
We highly recommend that you place a waterproof mat or fleece—it'll be the best decision you ever make! These amazing mats are perfect for use on the top of castles or hideouts too, where your bunny rabbit or guinea pig can sleep dry and soft! We'd absolutely love to make them to your measurements! Dirty wooden surface? No big deal.
If your lovely pet has a little accident on the wooden surface, don't worry! All you have to do is wipe it down with a damp, soapy cloth, then wipe with clean water and let it dry completely. Let's stop here! It is very important to let it DRY completely before using it again. Once it's nice and dry, you can pop it back into the bunny rabbit's, guinea pig's, chinchilla's, etc. apartment, and it'll be ready to use again!
If the wooden surface is very dirty, you can use a simple mixture of vinegar and water (50 / 50). You can also use apple cider vinegar, which is great too! Vinegar is a natural product and no harm will come to the animal. It's not just a fantastic product for cleaning wooden surfaces, but you can also use it to clean the bunny rabbit litter box or guinea pigs litter box.
